Lunch Review

Posted on June 11th, 2009 Filed under Food, Reviews

After writing that one review on doyoulikefood.com, I realized that I had finally found my calling. They always say to do what you love, so I took the plunge. I quit my job, moved to Colorado and set up shop to do food reviews. Going out gets pretty expensive though, so I decided to cook my own food. People keep telling me that that doesn’t make any sense. I keep telling people to eat a dick. Who knew that in my first review, I would do just that…

Today’s Lunch: Bratwursts (Chicken/Cheese and Pork) $2.36

I had bought some cheddarwursts in a pack of 6 and some buns in a pack of 8. I finished the cheddarwursts, and was left with these 2 extra buns. Instead of letting them go to waste, I went to Sunflower Market and picked up some freshly-made brats.

For the chicken and cheese brat, I cooked it to perfection, added a slice of pepper-jack cheese, relish, Dijon mustard and topped it off with mayonnaise. It was absolutely delicious. Although cooked in a pan, it tasted like it was right off the grill. I have no problem saying that this was better than anything I have ever had at Luke’s, Nathan’s or Dickie’s Dogs.

The pork brat did not fare as well. This was also with a slice of pepper-jack and relish, but I used regular yellow mustard and no mayonnaise on this one. The combination was good, but there were two problems. First, it didn’t really taste like a brat. It tasted like a giant breakfast sausage link. Now I like the breakfast sausage, but only in small quantities. This was way overpowering. Secondly, unlike the chicken brat, I did not cook it to perfection. It was still a little pink in the middle. I figure it’s okay though, no one ever died from eating raw pork. Edit: According to this page, approximately 20 people die from eating undercooked pork each year. I’m glad I threw away those last couple bites.

The meal was rounded out with some home-style jalapeño potato chips and a glass of tap water (no ice). These were really good, and helped to get some of the sausage taste out of my mouth between bites.

Overall, I would give this meal a 6 out of 10. The chicken brat gets a 10 and the pork gets a 1. I give an extra .5 for beautiful presentation.
